Nominations were announced this morning for the 24th Annual Webby Awards, the highest recognition of excellence on the Internet, presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS).

Like so many other events that have had to pivot in response to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, this year’s ceremony, appropriately dubbed Webbys From Home, will take place on May 19th.

The ceremony represents the first time the Webbys will be awarded virtually—which is fitting, as the Webbys celebrates the best of the Internet, embodying the excellence and creativity of agencies, organizations, and individuals around the world. Last year, 13,000 entries came from more than 70 countries.

Aspiring to the high standard of digital performance the Webbys represents has always been important for creative agencies and other businesses that operate online, but it’s become even more critical now that so many businesses have moved online or expanded their digital footprint.

“The Internet is our glue right now. It’s the most powerful tool for us to support and uplift one another, and it is no surprise that this year’s Nominees are the companies and people leading the charge,” said Claire Graves, Executive Director of The Webby Awards.

“They’ve accelerated their ingenuity, using their platforms to respond to this crisis by innovating, connecting, informing, and helping people all over the world.”

The resulting surge in digital activity has sped up an already rapidly-growing and evolving Internet. Standing out from the massive online herd has become more difficult to do, and the Webbys continue to recognize the select few who do it better than anyone else.

The awards now recognize excellence across seven major media types: Websites, Video, Advertising, Media & PR, Social, Apps, Mobile, & Voice, Games, and Podcasts. Two awards are presented for each category—The Webby Award and The Webby People’s Voice Award. A full list of nominees can be read here

While IADAS members select the nominees for both awards in each category, as well as the winners of The Webby Awards, The Webby People’s Voice is awarded by the voting public, in the spirit of the Open Web.

Each year, The Webby People’s Voice Awards garner millions of votes from all over the world, and this year’s event is expected to be the largest ever, with an estimated five million participants. WP Engine is proud to sponsor this online social phenomenon where the best and biggest Internet companies, brands, sites, and celebrities inspire billions of social impressions in an effort to win a People’s Voice Award and make Internet history.

Voting for 2020 is now live and will continue through Thursday, May 7th at 11:59 PM EST.  All votes will culminate with the Webby Winner Announcement and Internet Celebration on Tuesday, May 19th.
